Taiwan Unites for Japan’s Ishikawa Earthquake: Over NT$400 Million Raised in Support

Yenni C., January 17, 2024January 17, 2024

In response to the powerful earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula in Japan on January 1, causing widespread damage, the Taiwanese government has initiated relief efforts to assist Japan in its recovery. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.6, resulted in road ruptures, building collapses, and casualties. To aid in Japan’s disaster relief and reconstruction, the Executive Yuan instructed the Ministry of Health and Welfare to open a special fund for donations from the public. From January 5 to January 19, citizens are encouraged to contribute to the fund, with the collected amount to be handed over to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for assistance in the earthquake-stricken regions.

As of January 16, the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Social Assistance and Social Work Department revealed that the special fund for the Noto Peninsula earthquake has received a total of 116,079 donations, accumulating more than NT$4.236 billion. This sum does not include the NT$60 million contribution announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 4.
